Bold Relatable Claim

Open with a confident, sweeping statement that names something your viewer secretly feels, so they stop to confirm it's about them.

What it is

A cold-open hook that states one confident, sweeping claim about a feeling, habit, or experience the target viewer privately recognizes as their own. The "bold" half forces a reaction by sounding absolute or slightly provocative; the "relatable" half guarantees that reaction is self-recognition rather than dismissal. The viewer stays to confirm "that's literally me," not to learn a fact.

Why it works

It triggers instant self-recognition, which is more arresting than curiosity because the brain prioritizes information about the self. The boldness creates a small stake (agree or disagree), and because the claim is engineered to be true for your niche, most viewers resolve that stake by silently agreeing, which feels validating. That validation is the retention payoff and the comment driver: people reply "how did you know" or tag someone, because being accurately described feels like being seen.

Example

A video opens on a plain talking-head, no music, with the line: "If you have 47 browser tabs open right now and you still feel behind, this is for you." No visuals, no setup. The specificity of "47 tabs" plus "feel behind" makes scrolling viewers freeze and think "that's exactly me," and the comments fill with people confessing their own tab counts before the creator has made a single other point.

How to use it

Pick one narrow audience and write the most specific, slightly exaggerated truth about their inner life, not a generic observation. Lead with it in the first two seconds, stated as fact, not a question. Use concrete detail (a number, a precise scenario) so it feels observed rather than guessed. Make it bold enough that a stranger would react but never so bold that your actual audience disagrees. Then pivot fast into the payoff. Test variants: the same insight phrased more boldly usually retains better than the safe version.
