Emotional Priming Hook

Open by triggering a specific emotion before any information, so the viewer feels first and processes the whole video through that mood.

What it is

An Emotional Priming Hook deliberately induces one target feeling in the first one to three seconds, before the topic is even named. Unlike a curiosity or shock hook that withholds information, priming front-loads a mood (warmth, dread, outrage, awe, nostalgia) so the viewer's nervous system is set to a state that colors how they interpret everything that follows.

Why it works

Emotion arrives faster than comprehension. The brain tags a clip with a felt state before it understands the content, and that initial affect biases later judgment via the affect-as-information effect. A primed viewer's threshold for swiping drops because leaving now feels like abandoning an unresolved emotional state, not just an unfinished topic. Mood also boosts memory encoding and sharing, since people forward what made them feel, not merely what informed them.

Example

A creator opens on a tight shot of a worn voicemail screen, soft piano, voice cracking: "This is the last message my dad ever left me." No topic, no promise, just grief instilled in two seconds. Only after the viewer is already misty does the video reveal it is about backing up your phone before it's too late. The mundane tech tip rides an emotional wave it never could have generated on its own.

How to use it

Pick one emotion the video should be felt through, then engineer the first two seconds purely to trigger it, before stating the subject. Stack three levers at once: a face mid-feeling, a sound or score cue, and a charged spoken fragment. Lead with the feeling, not the fact ("I've never been this scared to post something" before the reveal). Make the priming honestly match your payoff or it reads as bait. Test by muting your hook: if the emotion still lands from face and text alone, the prime is strong enough.
