What it is
A retention move that layers overlapping open loops so resolution never fully arrives. Instead of one question answered before the next begins, the creator launches each new thread while a prior one is still unresolved. The accumulated unfinished threads create compounding forward pull, where the urge to keep watching is the sum of several live questions rather than a single one being chased and discharged.
Why it works
Curiosity gaps drive retention, but a single gap collapses the instant it closes, giving a natural exit point. Stacking keeps multiple gaps open simultaneously, so no single resolution ever returns the viewer to zero tension. The Zeigarnik effect makes unfinished tasks mentally sticky, and several stacked ones occupy working memory continuously. Each new thread also re-anchors attention right when the previous payoff might have triggered a swipe, eliminating the clean stopping points that kill watch time.
Example
A creator says "I quit my job and three days later this happened" (thread one), then cuts to "but first you need to know what my boss said the week before" (thread two opens before one resolves). Mid-explanation: "and this is the part nobody believes" (thread three). The boss reveal lands, but threads one and three are still open, so the swipe-away moment never cleanly appears and the viewer rides to the end.
How to use it
Script in threads, not points. Before each thread resolves, plant the next one in the same breath using bridges like "but first," "and that's not even the weird part," or "remember this for later." Aim to keep two or three loops live at all times. Stagger your payoffs so resolutions land on the offbeat, never all at once. Map it on paper: mark where each loop opens and closes, and confirm no moment has zero open loops. Close everything only in the final seconds, with the last reveal doubling as the reason to rewatch or comment.
